Liling comes from a long lineage of healers. Many of her ancestors were martial arts masters as well as acupuncturists. Most recently, Liling's father was both an acupuncturist and a medical doctor in China, specializing in stroke rehabilitation. He moved to the United States with the hope that Liling would pursue a career in Western medicine. However, she chose to follow in his original footsteps, practicing Traditional Chinese Medicine. Despite his disappointment, he left her his estate when he passed away.
By that time, Liling had already built a solid career in acupuncture and herbalism. Beyond her professional skills, she was a master of taijiquan (tai chi). The idea of immortality through breathing and movement took root in Liling's mind, influenced by the tales of Chinese immortals she'd grown up hearing. As she traced the history of the Chinese search for immortality, she realized that things had changed from ancient times. In the past, seekers of the truth relied on pills, tinctures, and herbal concoctions. Over time, this approach evolved into methods focused on breathing and movement.
But ancient stories talk about immortals appearing among men.
Modern stories don't.
One reason ancient methods fell out of favor was the high number of people who poisoned themselves while pursuing these risky formulas. This led Liling to ponder: Were modern techniques actually less effective? Were people now "playing it safe" with methods that didn't truly lead to immortality? Convinced that the potential for true immortality was worth the risk, she resolved to trust in the ancient methods.
Determined to find answers, Liling spent her family savings on purchasing rare herbs, some of which had to be smuggled into the United States. She mixed these herbs according to ancient recipes. Despite the warning from Western science about their toxicity, she took the risk. Her first attempts were disastrous; the potions she ingested poisoned her.
She writhed on the floor of her acupuncture shop late one night, the potion coursing painfully through her veins. It was a perilous brush with death, but it was also her Awakening. When she recovered, she found that she had stopped aging. However, this newfound longevity was not the immortality she sought; she had none of the powers attributed to the legendary Chinese immortals.
Now, awakened and aware of the possibilities that extend beyond the mundane and the ancient texts, Liling believes that the secrets to true immortality are not to be found in widely accessible ancient wisdom. Instead, she is convinced that these secrets are likely hidden in the lore of fellow mages.
Her quest for true immortality endures.

Role Playing Pitches
Ancient Scrolls, Modern Brokers:
Liling gets wind of a black-market auction in Necro City, where ancient scrolls containing potentially crucial information on immortality are set to be sold. She can't navigate this underworld alone. She needs insiders, maybe thieves, informants, or other mages, to help her access, retrieve, or bid for these coveted items.
The Elixir's Echo:
The potion Liling once took has left an ethereal signature on her, acting like a beacon to otherworldly entities. Spirits, creatures, or even mages who've been on the brink of death and back are inexplicably drawn to her. They come bearing tales, questions, or seeking the very essence that lingers within her. Who among them will become an ally, mentor, or a puzzle piece in her ongoing quest?
A Potion's Price:
After her initial experience, Liling is wary of experimenting on herself again. She's on the lookout for alchemists, potion masters, or even curious volunteers willing to collaborate or test her new brews. Will they risk the allure of potential immortality?
Mapping the Ethereal:
Liling believes there might be spiritual ley lines or nodes in Necro City that hold the key to enhancing her brews. She's in search of geomancers, spirits, or anyone sensitive to these energy flows to help her locate and tap into them.
